On December 25, 2016, Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, more commonly known by his professional name “George Michael” was found dead at the age of 53 in his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England.
No cause of death has been found thus far. It is presumed that the artist died of heart failure. George Michael’s manager, Michael Lippman described, in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, that George Michael is thought to have “passed away peacefully.” George Michael’s partner, Fadi Fawaz, was the first to find the performer on Christmas morning, as stated by media reports.
“I went round there to wake him up and he was just gone, lying peacefully in bed.” Fawaz was quoted in his report to the authorities, ”We don’t know what happened yet. Everything had been very complicated recently, but George was looking forward to Christmas, and so was I.”
A post-mortem was conducted four days afterward on December 29, but was “inconclusive,” according to Thames Valley Police. They also state that further tests would be carried out, but results were unlikely to be known for several weeks.
George Michael was world renowned as a brilliant singer, performer, and songwriter, whether working alone or collaborating with such artists as Elton John. He was also a part of the sensational 1980’s duo known as WHAM!. He created many popular hits such as “Wake me up before you Go-Go,” “Careless Whisper,” and “Last Christmas.”
George Michael made a major impact on British and American cultures in the 1980’s and 90’s as he touched the lives of nearly everybody who lived during the time and beyond. May he live forever in our memories, and in our hearts. Rest in peace, George Michael.
